Every year, before Chinese New Year, families reach for the almanac 通胜 with the same questions. Which way do we face when we open the door? Who in the family should go gently this year? Which corner of the house needs looking after? Here is what the almanac says about 2027, the year of the Fire Goat 丁未年, for families in Malaysia and Singapore.
When 2027 really begins
The almanac’s year does not turn on 1 January, or even on Chinese New Year. It turns at the first breath of spring, Li Chun 立春: 9:46 am on Thursday 4 February 2027 (Malaysia and Singapore time). From that moment the Fire Goat takes over from the Fire Horse. Babies born before 9:46 am that morning belong to the Horse year. Chinese New Year’s Day itself falls on Saturday 6 February 2027.
Where the God of Wealth comes from
On New Year’s morning the God of Wealth 财神 arrives from the Southwest 西南. Open your front door during a good hour, stand facing Southwest and bow three times to welcome him in. The God of Joy 喜神 also comes from the Southwest, and the God of Fortune 福神 from the Northwest.
- Put a plate of mandarin oranges and a red packet on a table by the door.
- Don’t sweep, wash your hair or pay debts on the first day — you’d push luck out.
- Use a compass app at the doorway to find Southwest.
Who meets the Year Guardian
Each year one heavenly general, the Year Guardian or Tai Sui 太岁, looks after the world. In 2027 it is General Miao Bing 缪丙大将军. The four signs that meet him head-on — Ox, Goat, Dog and Rat — traditionally visit a temple early in the year to ask for a smooth year. The signs best supported in 2027 are the Tiger, Dragon and Monkey.
Families usually go after Li Chun, register each person’s name and birth date for the year’s blessing 安太岁, offer incense, fruit and flowers, and carry the blessed amulet all year. Before the next New Year they return to give thanks 谢太岁.
Your home in 2027
Every home has lucky corners and tired corners, and they move each year. The luckiest homes of 2027 are those whose front door faces Southeast — the almanac says money walks straight through the door. In every home:
- North is the trouble corner: no drilling or renovation; hang a metal wind chime.
- Southwest is where the Year Guardian sits: don’t renovate, and don’t sit facing it to sign deals.
- Northeast is the quarrel corner: keep it calm, with a red item or a warm lamp.
Money weather
The economy’s chart for 2027 is strong, warm and a little dry. Fire — technology, energy, food, beauty and fun — leads the way, while Water — cash and easy money — is the weak spot. Keep a cash cushion and adapt early.
